French Vanilla Creamer
After moving to Nashville in the Fall of 2021, Andrew was about to host his girlfriend for the first time in his new apartment. Though his new place was barren minus a few essential pieces of furniture, he sought out to prep his space and make her feel welcome.
While shopping at his local supermarket, he recalled her love for french vanilla creamer in her coffee. Marshall searched for the smallest bottle, knowing he didn’t particularly like overly sweet coffee and probably wouldn’t drink it himself, but only found the regular-sized bottle to bring back for her.
One morning, while pouring coffee for the two of them, he decided to pour a bit of the creamer into his own cup to try.
After one sip, he was hooked. So much so that the bottle that felt insurmountable to consume was empty by week’s end. This prompted him to jokingly buy two half-gallon french vanilla creamers from his nearest Costco, since they were sold in a pair.
One morning while pouring the creamer into his cup, the hook idea came to his head and he immediately took out his phone and started recording.
“With some french vanilla creamer in the morning, snoozing the alarm we keep ignoring”
He wrote the chorus in less than an hour and in the coming months pushed himself to write the rest of the song to encompass love in it’s simplest form. Knowing how much he loved making coffee and being lazy with his girlfriend, he wrote from that headspace while also trying to write something relatable and fun for the listener.
Thus “French Vanilla Creamer” was born, and is now out to stream on all platforms. Listen here.
Growing Pains - 2020 Single
Marshall followed up his first EP with one armed with new textures and feelings, as he transitioned from solely acoustic recordings to full band arrangements and navigated his first real heartbreak.
Accurately named, Growing Pains highlights the raw truths that begin to reveal themselves after an emotional break up. Paired with the hurdles that accompany developing an artist’s own unique sound, the project itself mirrored both Marshall’s personal journey, as well as the journey to becoming the artist he is today.
“Fate”, the lead off single, was written in two parts, the initial during the fall out of his first mature relationship, and the ladder of the song was finished being written months after the breakup. The song confesses Marshall’s infatuation with his love interest, and how she has “taught him to love himself”, but follows up the proclamation with lines such as, “I know I’m a little too much, but I chose to give it a chance for love”. The song sets up the remaining two tracks eloquently as he learns to navigate the heartbreak, re-inventing himself in the process.
Recorded with fellow students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Growing Pains was initially slated to include more tracks, but due to the pandemic, was limited and released in Summer 2020. Despite this, the EP/Single shows a significant progression in Marshall’s songwriting as well as his sound as an artist, slowly starting to touch on more sensitive and vulnerable topics.
Letters from Lowell - 2018 EP
Inspired by his musical idol, John Mayer, Andrew sought after replicating a similar first release experience as Inside Wants Out, primarily acoustic and raw with his own EP, Letters From Lowell.
The collection of 5 songs are all one take, live acoustic performances, (except for “She’s Mine” which has additional guitar parts and vocals overdubbed).
Two of the songs were recorded in a dorm room, while the remaining three were finished in a friend's basement in Southern Massachusetts.
At the time of creation, Marshall was attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell studying music business. The name Letters From Lowell was inspired from him studying and living in Lowell while also silmultaneosuly being in a long distance relationship.
Marshall states that the songs were composed “like if I was to write a letter to someone… And though they’re not here with me right now, I just want them to know this is how I feel about them”.
“Give Your Love A Show” expresses Marshall’s innate desire to fall in love, while also learning to navigate a relationship that is filled with unrequited love. While songs like “It’s Okay” show his more vulnerable side, as he proclaims his desire to pursue a love interest despite the obstacles that may be in their way.
Overall, the five tracks show a lesson of what a first mature love truly looks like, shedding the preconceived notions that often saturate media.
Don’t Wish Your Life Away - 2021 Single
Following his tenure on Season 20 of NBC’s The Voice, where he finished as a quarter finalist, Andrew set out to release some music to build on his new audience.
Written during the lockdown in May 2020, “Don’t Wish Your Life Away” is a relatable and timeless message about the realization of growing up. After spending countless days walking around his large childhood neighborhood to pass the time with his family bubble, Marshall realized that the houses that were once filled with his friends growing up were now filled with young families.
“I see children fill the houses of my friends. Vacant memories of nights we spent all in our heads”
Paired with substantial life changes with his own immediate family, Andrew realized that he too was on the cusp of leaving his adolescence for adulthood and “Don’t Wish Your Life Away” flowed out of him, making for one of his most introspective songs to date.
